Jason’s Take: That’s amore! Sleek, handsome, and spacious, the MCY 80 is everything we’ve come to expect in a new model from this builder.
It’s challenging to get a true first impression of a brand-new yacht when you’re one of a select few to meet her, and giving up substantial home-field advantage along the way. That’s what happened to me when I ventured to Trieste in late July to look in on Monte Carlo Yachts at the company’s state-of-the-art facility, about 20 minutes outside of town in Monfalcone.
At a black-tie gala, more than 300 guests were greeted with a true spectacle, including some impressive video presentations shown in the round, on a cylindrical screen suspended from the ceiling of the shop, followed by a sit-down dinner in the company’s new, high-tech paint and curing shed, which can hold a yacht more than twice the size of the 80-footer that was making her debut. A quayside celebration continued into the night, as opera singers welcomed the star of the evening, the MCY 80.
The sixth model in the yacht line from Beneteau’s luxury brand, the MCY 80 follows on the heels of the 2015 introduction of the company’s first foray above 100 feet LOA, the 105, and showcases the builder’s ability to put many well-thought-out details into a package with a fine
finish, designed inside and out by Nuvolari Lenard. Powered by a pair of 1,650-horsepower MAN diesels, this gleaming, pearl-gray hull is punctuated notably by the trademark overlapping-circle design of hullside windows on either side that, to some, resemble the Chanel logo, fittingly enough considering MCY’s French owners.
Stepping on board and getting a sense of the spaces offered on the main deck, one feels a very European sensibility, thanks largely to the galley-down layout, a helm area that can be closed off from the saloon, and a separate entrance to the crew’s quarters aft. Hull No. 2, built for America, will be at the 2017 Yachts Miami Beach Show. See her for yourself, and listen as the strains of an aria fill your ears.

MCY makes the most of solid design with serviceable engine space,
a truly enormous flying bridge, and a foredeck that’s anything but wasted.
