Call
it a “Rayvolution”? Raymarine is shaking up its product lines
big time, including replacing its SL stand-alone electronics with the
radically redesigned C Series. The most obvious change is the landscape
screen configuration, which makes ergonomic sense especially when considering
the whomping 12.1-inch, 600x800-pixel, top-of-the-line unit (shown). Then
you’ll realize that even the 6.5-inch and 8.4-inch sizes can be plotter,
radar, or digital fishfinder—or all of the above—depending simply
on which sensors you hook up. In fact the redesign runs deep; during a
recent prototype test off Florida, I witnessed significant interface and
performance improvements, plus welcome new features like the “Twist
N’ Click” knob, multiple waypoints overlaid on a radar window,
and unlimited route and track storage to a CF chart card. The big C120
shown starts at $3,185 with a GPS sensor.
Raymarine is also introducing
new small-boat electronics organized as the A Series and is all grins
about the eventual makeover of its networked multistation displays.
