Lowrance
may be best known to heartland fishermen, but these days its gear has
enough smarts and value to please boaters of many persuasions. The LCX-104c’s
bright 10.4-inch screen nicely displays both the Navionics Gold cartography
shown, which now comes on economical XL3-size SD cards, and Lowrance’s
own MapCreate medium-detail U.S. coastal and street mapping, which is
included along with a card reader and PC route-building software. An outstanding
example of the well-designed interface is the ability to custom overlay
any screen with data in variable font sizes (shown), an effective alternative
to normal data windows. The 104 can also save and replay plotter/sonar
tracks, and its 1,000-watt, dual-frequency sounder offers a lot of sophisticated
controls. The full LCX-104c is $2,500, with fishfinder- or plotter-only
models available.
