The 972 is a major update
of Northstar’s ground-breaking 962 discussed in the column, and
thus its high-resolution (1024x768 pixel), 15-inch multifunction display
is actually the head end of a purpose-built navigation PC. Like the 962,
it supports paper-like Maptech chart CDs, but now it offers cartographic
choices. Its hard drive comes loaded with Nobeltec’s worldwide Passport
vector charts along with 3-D bathymetric data and photo maps for U.S.
waters (the Bahamas is also covered); it takes only a phone call to purchase
and unlock a region. Options for a $11,995 972 include various-size high-resolution
Ethernet radar scanners, a black-box fishfinder, and a second full-function
control head. Video input and output are also possible, and one possible
repeater is the company’s new 1502 monitor, which can handle up
to six camera, entertainment, black box, and computer inputs. The $6,495
1502’s case complements both the 972 and Northstar’s new 15-inch
6000i embedded multifunction display.
