ShipModul’s little
(5.4"x2.5"x1.2") multiplexer boxes don’t look like
much but they can prevent significant hair loss for boaters or their installers
who are trying to get multiple NMEA 0183 electronics—plotters, radars,
autopilots, instruments, etc.—to talk peacefully among themselves
and also with PC programs. The company’s latest MiniPlex-42USB high-end
model not only solves the added issue presented by computers without standard
serial ports (see “Q&A”), but also offers sophisticated
data buffering, overflow management, sentence filtering, and support for
fast-talking compasses. (And all this mumbo jumbo is evidence of why NMEA
2000 will be most welcome at mix-and-match navigation stations.) The Wired
Boat, ShipModul’s North American distributor, sells this unit for
$455.
