One component of the
truly novel Anchor Alert system is a rugged bronze pod that contains both
a motion sensor and an acoustic transmitter (actually three transmitters
to account for all the ways the pod might settle on the bottom). Installed
between your anchor and chain, the system can wirelessly monitor actual
anchor motion, keep a history, and set off an alarm if the movement exceeds
a user-set level. That’s in contrast to GPS-based anchor alarms that
sometimes sound off falsely due to a boat’s harmless swinging. The
Anchor Alert can also measure the distance between boat and anchor, helpful
when setting it or getting underway. I’m not sure if there will be
a big demand for this product at $1,295, but it’s certainly a technological
achievement (which worked just fine in my testing) and apparently just
the beginning of developer Ascend Marine’s pioneering line.
