The Coast Guard may be way behind the curve of VHF technology, but give 'em a break.

The SkyMate satellite communicator, software, and service package—which quite impressed me back in 2003—has since won the affection of many cruisers with its simple suite of e-mail, weather, and off-boat monitoring. It’s even found its way into the Maptech i3/Sea Ray Navigator and commercial fishing fleets. The new $1,299 200 package adds a copy of Nobeltec’s eChart Mariner and a built-in GPS, which makes installation of both products even easier. And they can run together, sharing the GPS, with Mariner serving either as a backup plotter/planner or the real deal with the addition of detailed Passport charts.
