I
spent a chunk of my time at the Miami Boat Show checking out the R435
because it introduces two new and significant plotter display features.
Both are useful when you are underway and actively plotting. “Autozoom”
regularly adjusts to keep you and your next waypoint always in view (and
thus will smartly show more area and less detail on an open run, and vice-versa
as you approach a mark). The other (shown), called ScreenAmplifier, simply
offsets the display so you see more chart ahead. Both really help the
R435’s bright screen seem bigger than its modest six inches. This
plotter also notably uses convenient Compact Flash cards for storage of
nav data and the new Navionics Gold charts, which look good and include
both tide and current predictions. The interface is a little different
from Raymarine’s Pathfinder series, but straight forward. $1,100.
