Here is a bit of software that can put any U.S. NOAA tide prediction right on your cellphone in the informative graphic format normally seen only on chartplotters or PCs. Sun and moon info is included, and you can even have the phone ring you at a custom time interval before or after high tide, sunset, etc. So far the Salt Water Tides service, which costs $5 a month, is only available to Verizon cell users who have Motorola or LG phones capable of downloading “Get It Now” applications, but think of it as the beginning of a flood. Developer ekkosoft.us and others are hard at work dreaming up novel marine uses for handsets, which are rapidly becoming little computers, GPS-equipped to boot. Yes, heaven help us, a Windows phone-operating system does exist, and at least one cellphone “plotter” will come to market this year.
