One
of the great pleasures of cruising to remote anchorages is the chance
to experience a starry summer night in its full glory, and the pleasure
is enhanced by a better understanding of what’s going on out there.
When I mentioned it in my March column on PDA navigation, Pocket Stars
1.0 was already a brilliant Pocket PC tool for learning the planets, stars,
and constellations (as well as navigation chores like calculating great
circle courses, horizon distances, and sextant sights). Now version 2.0
adds planetarium-style animations and astronomical graphics, and—most
important—a PC twin. The prices are nearly absurd at $15 for either
program or $24 for both, though they are only available for purchase and
downloading online.
