While some training is recommended, the HeartSine Samaritan automated external defibrillator (AED) is designed so that even an untutored layman can help a shipmate who’s suffering from cardiac arrest. The trick is its ability to diagnose the patient and then deliver clear guidance to the rescuer via text, graphics, and even voice prompts. The Samaritan is also able to optimize its pulses to an individual’s impedance and log all AED events and up to 12 hours of electrocardiogram graphs for later PC perusal by medical professionals. The $2,199 unit’s rechargeable battery can stand by for two years, ready to power 12 hours of monitoring, 120 full-energy shocks, or any combination thereof.
