Some skippers
might be surprised to learn that the GPS portion of their plotter may
be entirely housed in its antenna. Si-Tex is one of the first to separately
market such a self-contained marine unit, ready to drive almost any position-desiring
devices via the NMEA 0183 protocol. The $299, waterproof GPK-10 is only
three inches high and four inches in diameter and comes with a 50-foot
cable carrying power and sensor wires. The unit has WAAS correction technology
usually accurate to about nine feet and is one of the first able to track
18 satellites simultaneously. While it is not (yet) possible to see that
many satellites at once, this capability supposedly helps to speed up
fix acquisitions.
