The
Deluo Universal is a good example of where smaller, cheaper GPS chips
can lead. For just $100 you get a tiny box able to track 12 satellites
and deliver the results to your PC’s serial port (while taking power
from its mouse port). Optional cables at $10 apiece let it work via USB
(particularly useful for laptops lacking regular serial connections) or
with several PDA models. Also included is Rand McNally street-mapping
software. The Deluo is not high-performance, and setup can be a bit fussy,
but its simple operation, small size, attractive price, and interface
flexibility make it great for someone experimenting with digital charting
or as a backup GPS sensor for established systems.
