Discovering a little-known but useful source of safety and weather information, and a great NMEA repeater as well.

Dick Tracy goes megayachting! The VisiFone is touted as the first simple device to offer smooth video and clear audio via broadband (minimum 128k) Internet. It needs only an ethernet connection—not a PC— to use, but the folks at the other end of the call also need a VisiFone or one of several compatible teleconferencing systems. The device can be expanded with regular monitors, cameras, and microphones. The $600 VisiFone is primarily designed for homes and offices with unlimited broadband service, where the calls are essentially “free,” but Sea Tel has teamed with Viseon to highlight the capabilities of its high-end WaveCall 4003 onboard broadband system, which can now be had with unlimited service contracts (though, of course, at considerably more than onshore rates).
