Europeans
have been using fixed cellular terminals for years. Now Skyewave is importing
a marinized version built by Ericsson that’s got much to offer boaters.
You can use it with regular phones, even a PBX, and the voice quality
is supposedly of land-line quality, thanks to some software magic. It
also supports standard fax machines and modems and has a PC port for “always
on” GPRS Internet (see Q&A). The $900 Marine Wireless Terminal
(MWT) works at the maximum-allowed wattage on all three GSM bands, making
it a “world phone,” and includes an external antenna. Note that
with the clever use of a SIM card you could use the same number and contract
with both the MWT and a regular, unfixed cellphone.
