The Automatic Identity
Systems (AIS) being installed aboard commercial vessels and some large
yachts provide better collision-avoidance information than even the best
ARPA radars. JRC’s latest JHS-182 model is purportedly the most compact
Class A (IMO-approved) unit available, starting with the six-inch display/controller
pictured. Not shown is the single antenna which houses both GPS and transponder
and which ties to a separate connection box with only a coax cable. The
$4,195 system will constantly broadcast your ID, course, speed, and much
more to all AIS-equipped vessels within VHF range while also collecting
their data for monitoring on its own display and on your connected radars
or charting systems. Yachts not regulated by the IMO are permitted to
carry AIS, but supposedly—and hopefully —less expensive and
more suitable Class B units will be available soon.
