The
64th edition of one of the boating world’s most respected references,
Chapman Piloting & Seamanship, has just been released from
the Sterling Publishing Company.
The most recent edition
of the nearly 100-year-old reference guide, standard text for private
boating school courses and recommended by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary
for its own classes, runs 928 pages (about 250 pages longer than the previous
edition), with 1,500 full-color illustrations and charts. It was reportedly
designed to be more “user-friendly and accessible.”
Although there are some
“if you don’t know this already, you shouldn’t be boating”
segments in the guide, just about any boat owner will benefit from it,
especially the sections outlining current boating laws, communication
and navigation, and an in-depth discussion of weather, tides, and currents.
Considering all the
information packed between the two hard covers, the $49.95 retail price
is just a drop in the bucket. It’s available in most major bookstores
and marine retailers nationwide.
