In December 2002
the U.S. Coast Guard’s Life Jacket Rule, which requires all children
under the age of 13 to wear a PFD while onboard recreational vessels,
went into effect. Even so, children aren’t usually eager to throw
one on, as the traditional PFDs can be uncomfortable and hot to wear for
extended times.
Enter Aqua Force, which
has designed a PFD that doubles as a swimsuit and is said to be more comfortable
for a child to wear all day than a traditional vest-style PFD. The Aqua
Force suit uses strategically placed foam blocks that are permanently
sewn into the swimsuit to maintain buoyancy and balance in the water.
The Aqua Force swimsuit
is available in high-visibility pink and neon green and fits children
ranging from 30 to 90 pounds. It is said to be the only Coast Guard-approved
swimwear flotation device and satisfies the agency’s Life Jacket
Rule. Available through the company’s Web site and at various stores
throughout the country, it retails for approximately $75.
