It’s been said
that kids today aren’t as interested in boating as their elders were
and that they’d rather play video/computer games than enjoy the water.
While that’s debatable, there’s now a brilliant book on the
market that should be a foolproof way to get kids more interested in boating.
The Ship’s
Log for Kids is a place for young ones to write, draw, and learn about
their quality time on the water with the family. There’s space for
them to sketch the boat; log the date/time, weather, and destination of
a trip; and enter names and addresses of cruisers they meet along the
way. The book also covers safety issues (i.e., Do you have a radio onboard?
Would you know how to use it in an emergency?) and offers games and puzzles
and information about aquatic life, Morse code, constellations, weather
prediction (red sky at night, sailor’s delight), reading charts,
and more.
This book makes a great
gift for the holidays and should be a sure bet for getting kids excited
about the 2005 boating season. It’s available at West Marine for
$16.99.
