Keeping
your fiberglass hull and topsides clean and stain-free has always been
a high priority on the daily maintenance list. With dirt, grime, and the
more-than-occasional “gifts from above” courtesy of our feathered
friends being constant annoyances, keeping the shiny finish can be a full-time
job for you and your crew.
While cruising the maintenance
aisles at the recent Miami International Boat Show, I came across a stain-cleaning
product from Davis Instruments. Fiberglass Stain Remover (FSR) is a gel
that the company says can remove rust stains as well as oil and exhaust
and transom stains.
I sent a sample out
to a friend of mine who runs a dive boat out of New Jersey. With his boat
currently up on the hard, he was able to use FSR on not only some rust
stains but also the grime and accumulated dirt of a harsh winter season.
He reported that the product lived up to its claims. Using a sponge to
apply the gel to the areas he needed to clean, and letting it sit for
a few minutes before rinsing it with fresh water, he found that with some
elbow grease and an additional application, he was able to get out some
really stubborn stains.
FSR comes in 16-ounce
bottles and 67.8-fluid-ounce containers. Suggested prices are $9.95 and
$27.95, respectively. —K.K.
