When the remnants of Hurricane Isabel prepared to give the Northeast United
States a good downpour, I thought it would be a good chance to see if
the Kord Kap I’d just received would work. It comes as a single cover
or two-cover set and is designed to protect the metal contacts of your
boat’s shorepower cable when the cable is not in use. The Kap is
available in 30-, 50-, and 100-amp sizes.
I simply screwed the
30-amp Kap onto my boat’s shorepower cable and waited to see if the
rain, wind, and saltwater environment would have any corrosive effect
on the metal contacts. Simply put, nothing happened, and the contacts
remained dry. The Kord Kap did its job thanks to a strong threaded seal
and UV-resistant composite materials.
Pricing starts at $12.95
for a cover for a single 30-amp plug. Sets for 30- and 50-amp plugs are
$21.95, while a cap for a single 100-amp plug also runs $21.95. Kord Kaps
are available through West Marine retail outlets and directly from the
manufacturer. —Capt. Patrick Sciacca
