Leave it to a Switzerland-based
yacht designer to bring an American home-furnishings company to the attention
of an Italian builder.
François Zuretti
has used many of J. Robert Scott’s pieces aboard the dozens of custom
and semicustom yachts he and Benetti have collaborated on in recent years.
Now Benetti has struck a deal to have J. Robert Scott be the exclusive
furnishings, textiles, lighting, and accessories supplier for its semicustom
Vision series. The deal is the first of its kind in the megayacht business—and
as a result the American firm is also developing some pieces strictly
for the Vision line.
The partnership makes
sense on a few levels. J. Robert Scott is often discussed in the same
breath as “California design,” emphasizing clean lines, natural
products, and neutral palettes. The spirit evoked by California design
ties in well to the decor preferences of today’s yacht owners. In
fact, the company says that some of its clients were requesting pieces
to be made for their yachts.
The partnership also
makes sense from another perspective. Besides the fact that Zuretti has
used several of J. Robert Scott’s pieces on previous Benettis, the
company’s furnishings and accessories had already been selected for
other famous, yachts like Pelorus and Christina O.
But don’t think
that J. Robert Scott will simply be using the same pieces for the Vision
line. The company says it doesn’t have any stock items; it custom-makes
all its furnishings and additionally provides clients with a choice of
more than 60 finishes. In fact, it says it will create some new items
and finishes specifically for the Vision yachts. The renderings shown
on the previous page give you an idea of how different the yachts will
look.
To get an even better
idea, you’ll just have to order your own yacht.
