Most of the stories
that appear on these pages tell of successful projects, and the majority
of custom projects do end happily, with beautiful yachts delivered to
proud owners by builders and designers who are paid fairly for a job
well-done. But once in a while things go awry, and sometimes it’s
the unhappy ending that makes for the more interesting tale. So we queried
a few of the big-name custom yacht designers to see if they would share
some stories of projects that never saw the light of day.
While some ventures
may fail simply because of a financial setback (of either the owner or
the yard), the reasons for projects dying on the vine are as diverse as
the owners who commission them. Sometimes the owner’s wishes are
just too extreme or a radical design concept is too far ahead of its time.
On occasion, the prospective client turns out to be a fraud. And we know
of at least one instance where a project was the victim of political upheaval
in the owner’s country. Here’s a sampling of the tales we
were told, with thanks to the designers who were willing to share, in
the hope that others might avoid such circumstances.
