2. OCTOPUS - 414'0"
The more we learn about Paul Allen, the more we’re convinced
that he’s a frustrated rock star. The cofounder of Microsoft not
only funded the Experience Music Project, a Seattle-based museum dedicated
to music, but also had a music studio created onboard his yacht. Add to
that the fact that he has a band—in fact, during a party held on
Octopus during the Cannes Film Festival in May, Allen and his fellow musicians
rocked out with Dave Stewart, best known as a member of the British group
The Eurythmics. As if that weren’t enough, in August U2 front man
Bono was photographed onboard in St. Tropez, France. (And to think that
we had to cough up a hundred bucks to see the Irish rock group from nosebleed
seats in New York City.) Maybe Allen’s also a frustrated athlete.
After all, he owns two professional teams and has a basketball court on
Octopus’ aft deck. (We’ll leave it to you to decide whether
Allen or Larry Ellison came up with the idea first.) Regardless, the one
thing we arecertain about is the fact that this expedition-like yacht
continues to attract more interest than any other boat that we’ve
tracked in our 20-year history. The minutiae of her features are discussed
endlessly by dockwalkers and yacht-watchers alike, ranging from why tenders
such as a remote-operated vehicle were relocated from a lower deck to
a higher deck several months ago and even to the meaning of the letters
J and B seen on a glass partition in an alfresco bar.
