When Adventurers Become Rescuers

The crew of the expedition yacht Iceberg set out to explore one of the world's least-visited corners—and found themselves leading a disaster relief mission instead.

For Mike Crothers, the mission has always been simple: take his 111-foot Dashew-designed aluminum expedition yacht, Iceberg, where few yachts have ever ventured. That means the forgotten atolls of Papua New Guinea, uncharted reefs, pristine dive sites, and communities that may see only a handful of visiting vessels each year.

But when a once-in-half-a-century cyclone devastated the remote atoll of Budi Budi, exploration took a back seat to survival. In this conversation, Crothers and his crew share the story of delivering critical aid, evacuating residents, and witnessing both the fragility and resilience of life in one of the Pacific’s most isolated regions.

Cruthers and the Iceberg crew also discuss the unique capabilities of Iceberg, life aboard an expedition yacht that spends nine months a year off the grid, and the enduring appeal of the last wild places on Earth.
