Evening reading has been a staple of my adult life. Biographies, history books, and magazines from the masters of their craft once sat neatly stacked on my nightstand. Over the last couple of years, my reading list has shifted to children’s books that range from religion to taco-eating dragons and everything in between. Some of the stories have been excellent, but many have left much to be desired. “I could write this,” I would often grouse. This year, after reading The Pout-Pout Fish an unfathomable number of times, I finally decided to take a crack at it.
A passion project aimed at real boaters, my goals for my first children’s book were similar to what I strive for in Power & Motoryacht: to entertain parents and, perhaps in some small way, engage and inspire the next generation of boaters.
Boy and a Boat is the story of a young boy who comes face-to-face with the fears and freedom that come with leaving the dock alone for the first time. At its heart, it’s a father-and-son story—one that, much like this magazine, I hope inspires young readers to seek the freedom found just beyond their comfort zones.
