#3: OCTOPUS—414’0″

Why bother watching movies ranging from Imagining Argentina to The Lady From Shanghai in your onboard cinema when you can visit the cities themselves with your yacht? That’s the spirit that Paul Allen and Octopus seem to have been embracing since the start of the year. We say “seem” because the yacht stopped in Ushuaia, Argentina, and Shanghai, China, by the time spring had sprung, but we don’t know whether the Microsoft billionaire and philanthropist was onboard for both trips (or even others in between). Regardless, the yacht caused a particular stir in China. “My colleagues who boarded the vessel for a routine port check were surprised to see a submarine onboard. That’s really something,” Shanghai Daily quoted a frontier inspection police officer as saying.

FAST FACTS

Octopus measures 414 feet. Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey measures 433 feet wall to wall. If Octopus were placed inside the field from end to end, she would fit with just nine and a half feet of clearance fore and aft. Heck, if you cover her deck with turf, there’s enough room for Paul Allen’s Seattle Seahawks to play a football game onboard. The vessel is actually 54 feet longer than the Seahawks’ playing surface at Qwest Stadium.—Capt. Patrick Sciacca
