Active Interest Media Marine Group Editors
Select the Best of the Year in Editors’ Choice Awards

The AIM Marine Group Editors’ Choice Awards are chosen by the editors of the AIM Marine Group magazines—Power & Motoryacht, Sail, Soundings, Yachts International, PassageMaker, BoatQuest.com, and Soundings Trade Only. Presented at the Tranquilo Hotel on Friday, October 31, 2014, during the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show, the Editors’ Choice Awards highlight boatbuilding achievement for boats of all sizes in categories including Best Motoryacht, Best Passagemaker, Best Sportfishing Boat, and Best Down East Cruiser, and most innovated technology.

AIM’s editorial experts conducted a lengthy examination of new models launched in each category over the last 12 months. The editors focused their criteria on the innovation of design and the quality of construction, backed up by hands-on testing.

“Boaters value their time on the water more than ever,” says AIM Marine Group Publisher Gary De Sanctis. “So to find the glimmers of gold—incidences of true groundbreaking innovation that’s well executed—and then to share them with our audience of serious boaters across all categories—that’s the goal.”

To uncover these winning designs, the editors reviewed entries submitted by manufacturers and evaluated each to ensure it executes its mission and purpose. “Creative design has to be built to make a difference,” says George Sass Jr., editorial director for the AIM Marine Group and Editor-in-Chief of Power & Motoryacht. “We’ve seen all of these boats perform in their element. That’s what sets them apart.”

The complete list of the AIM Marine Group Editors’ Choice Award winners begins here. ▶

Best Multihull 40-49 Feet:

Aquila 44

Our judges wrote: The designers took the power cat catamaran concept and turned it on its end. That’s the type of innovation that will set future trends.

See more about the Aquila 44 here ▶

Best Multihull 30-39 Feet:

Aspen 32

Our judges wrote:  With the new Aspen 32, Larry Graf continues to push the envelope. The out of the box thinking produced one of the most efficient, and innovative boats in this size range.

Best Motoryacht 90-100 Feet:

Azimut 95 Grande

Our judges wrote:  The external spaces on board the Azimut 95 are superb and it’s one of the sharpest looking yachts in its class on an easily driven hull.

Best Down East Cruiser 30-39 Feet:

Best Motoryacht 60-69 Feet:

Coastal Craft 65 Concord

Our judges wrote:  Jeff Rhodes and Gregory Marshall hit it out of the park with this build. Top-shelf engineering and smart details created a winner.

Best Fish Boat Less than 30 Feet:

Everglades 255 Center Console

Power & Motoryacht Senior Editor Kevin Konig wrote: Even in such rough environs, at no point did she arouse even the slightest suspicion that she wasn’t up to the challenge. No creaks, no moans, and as dry a ride as one could rightfully expect.

Best Passagemaker (Long Distance Cruiser)
50-59 Feet:

Fleming 58

Our judges wrote: I didn’t think it was possible to improve upon the 55. But the 58 incorporates all of the product evolution of the 55 and takes it to the next level.

Best Down East Cruiser 40-49 Feet:

Hinckley T43

Power & Motoryacht Editor-at-Large wrote: In the end, it’s the 43’s proportions that most people will swoon over. In fact you could fairly say that she’s the ultimate Picnic Boat.

Best Multihull 50 Feet plus:

Horizon 52

Our judges wrote: Wow! You need to get on this boat to believe it. The quality. The efficiency. And the engineering have not only created a class winner multi-hull, but a class winner motoryacht.

Best Passagemaker (Long Distance Cruiser)
60-80 Feet:

Marlow 62E

Our judges wrote: It is this attention to detail and the underlying philosophy of continuous incremental refinement that explains why Marlow yachts stay competitive for so long: The 62E is engineered without compromise.

Best Down East Cruiser 50 Feet Plus:

MJM 50z

Our judges wrote: The MJM 50z is very technically interesting, but more than this, her technology raises the owner’s level of enjoyment. Her light weight will make her accelerate and handle like a sports car, and at the same time, Doug Zurn’s hull design gives her a very seakindly ride. Aren’t these the reasons most of us love to drive powerboats in the first place?

Best Motoryacht 80-89 Feet:

Monte Carlo 86

Our judges wrote: Advanced building techniques, smart engineering, and an easy motion at sea make this one of the most yachts I’ve run in a long time.

Outer Reef 860 CPMY
