Developments in Solid-State Radar from Simrad and Furuno

Developments in Solid-State Radar

Simrad’s Halo-4 is a 4-foot open-array radar transmitter equipped with a brushless motor and helical gears that require no maintenance for 10,000 hours and run quietly. The radar is equipped with a blue LED light on each side of the base (which can be turned off to meet area regulations).

This screen grab shows a blue target at 12 o’clock, about 3 miles out, depicting birds, according to Simrad. The Halo system uses tuning presets that the company says will let even novice users get the most from the system.

Furuno’s FAR-3000 solid-state radar has recently become available. Called “chart radar,” the FAR-3000
provides excellent situational awareness and is geared to commercial vessels, according to Furuno.
