Merritt 43

Sure, she can raise fish. But she also has raised the eyebrows of anglers, dockhands, and skippers since she arrived on the scene in 1968. A sweet sheerline and proud bow provide balance to a deckhouse, flying bridge, and tuna tower in an ineffable synthesis of form and function.

Bertram 31

Even this horrendous, yet functional hard top can’t destroy the fine lines of the Bertram 31. Although she wasn’t perfect (31’s are a tad wet) all sins were forgiven thanks to her sweet profle and simplicity.

Shelter Island 38

A prospective buyer once asked builder Peter Needham of CH Marine what might be the biggest problem with this boat. Needham answered that the biggest complaint he hears from owners is papparazzi—people snap pictures and come right up and ask, “What kind of boat is that?”

SEA CZAR, ex-ZaZU, 1970 Feadship 9

The canoe stern of this 95-footer built in Holland in 1970 is enough to break your heart. Then you look her over more closely, from the concave sections along the bow to her gently raked pilothouse windshield, she’s just tidy and complete.

Aphrodite

Oh come on! This was just too easy. Aphrodite is a 1937 commuter built by Purdy Boat Company for Jock Whitney, a financier and U.S. ambassador. We could wax poetic about her magnificent lines, but by now you’re not even reading anymore, you’re just gazing at the picture and so are we…

Hacker Craft 27

From the cold lakes of northern climes surrounded by summer cottages to the high-falutin’ environs of Palm Beach, the Hacker Craft is at home anywhere. A quiet confidence springs from these simple lines, and draws the eyes of all those who are in the know.

Trumpy 58

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, Love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art. By this measure the owners of this Trumpy 58 are the embodiment of good taste and builder John Trumpy was a skilled artist. Somerset was built in 1971 and besides dressing up a harbor, she’s a fine cruiser. She’s listed for $975,000.

Sabre 48 Salon Express

The Sabre 48 is the purposeful, attractive woman who gets up early to take a jog. She doesn’t spend a whole lot of time on make-up and fixing her hair. She’s supremely confident. But hey, stare long enough, and you realize she’s a knock-out. And one of the most successful motoryacht launches in Sabre’s 45 year history.

Donzi 28

Often a spirited performer gets missed as folks watch everything but her shape—the stopwatch, the competitors, the threatening roll. And then it’s all flashbulbs and glory and smiling winners. Have a look at the boat next time.
