Buyer’s Guide:
The MJM 50z is the latest from the Down East builder and the largest boat in its line. One big difference you’ll find between this boat and her little sister, the 40z, is the Seakeeper Gyro-Stabilizer that comes standard on the bigger boat (it’s an option on the 40z). This makes for a package that comes off the rack so to speak with a very flat and comfortable ride, as it improves on the stability of what is already a stable boat with a low center of gravity.
Like the 40z, the standard layout on the 50z is for a cruising couple with the only stateroom located in the bow (referred to as the “Great Cabin” layout on the 50z, and with good reason). However there is an option on the 50z to have the large sitting area amidships replaced with another stateroom, which would make sense if you plan to cruise with friends. If you don’t plan on having overnight guests, why not take the “Great Cabin” layout? Heck, if your friends get tired they can always sleep on the settees, of which there are many.
