Meeting the Man in the Blue Suit

If you’re not fishing a tournament with bait and hook-type restrictions, then why not try to mix it up with a blue marlin? “It’s tough to beat a black-and-purple or blue-and-white Islander with a horse ballyhoo on a 11/0 Mustad 7731 hook,” says Capt. Jon Duffie of the Billfisher out of Ocean City, Maryland. “Fish it off the short ’rigger—left or right, it doesn’t matter—and find a color change, a weedline, or a current edge—anywhere you find dolphin or skipjack tuna.” Duffie also recommends wind-on leaders fished with a short trace to allow you to bring the fish in close for a simple release.
