Hatteras 60 Convertible

“It’s difficult to obtain financing and insurance on some of these 25-year-old boats, but for the buyer who doesn’t need financing and can get insurance it’s truly a diamond in the rough. The Hatteras 60 and boats of this sort offer a great platform both as a liveaboard and for fishing. The interior space of the old boats is enormous. The cockpits are renowned for their fishability. The value is truly the best value for the dollar out there, if and when you acquire one in good shape. Yes they have a lot of hours, but the old Detroit Diesels are meant to be rebuilt. Updated electronics and painted surfaces add to the character of these older Hatteras boats.”

Edison Irvine, Gilman Yacht Sales; www.gilmanyachts.com
“If you can find a boat that you really like and intelligently go about spending money on it you can save a lot of money in today’s market. That Hatteras I have listed hasn’t got a thing wrong with it. The owner has gone through it and through it and through it. And it’s got all the bells and whistles and it’s a very comfortable boat. So if people realize he’s done all this work on it they’ll pay a little more. But it can be hard to get that initial phone call, to explain to somebody that this thing’s really ready to go, even though it’s three times as old as my kid. It is what it is.”

Geoff Zimmerman, Allied Marine; www.alliedmarine.com
“When the Hatteras 60 came out it was always known as a good sea boat. It’s a 60-foot boat in a pretty low price range, so it’s a lot of boat for the money. The 12-71s are known to be a very long-lasting motor and the parts are still readily available. Some of them have had the front windshield fiberglassed in, which allowed them to do different things with the galley area.”
