The team behind Power & Motoryacht and Outboard magazine take home 10 awards for editorial excellence.
Editors from Power & Motoryacht won multiple Boating Writers International (BWI) awards and several honorable mentions during the Miami International Boat Show. The annual awards recognize excellence in marine journalism by association members across 16 categories. All submissions to the contest were published in 2018, which corresponded with the debut of Outboard magazine, which was awarded multiple awards and merits of excellence.

Deputy Editor Capt. Bill Pike took home second place in the Boating Issues, News and Analysis category for “Future Shock” (Power & Motoryacht, Oct. 2018) with contributing editor Chris Caswell receiving honorable mention in the same category for “Driven by Design” (Power & Motoryacht, Aug. 2018). Pike finished in third place in The Business of Boating for “True Original” (Outboard) and Uncharted Waters (Power & Motoryacht) in Boating Columns.

Managing Editor Simon Murray won first place in the Seamanship, Rescue and Safety category for “Back to School” (Power & Motoryacht, May 2018). Judge Jim Rhodes praised the story: “From the lead sentence, Murray captured the reader’s attention and held it throughout this well-written article. He writes with an effortless style for easy reading, with personal anecdotes that helped drive home the message.” Murray also won third place in the Boating Adventures category for “Fast to the Finish,” published in Outboard magazine, while Power & Motoryacht Editor-in-Chief Dan Harding claimed honorable mentions for “65 Feet and An Army of Horses” (Outboard) and “The Maine Difference” (Power & Motoryacht, June 2018) and Soundings Editor-in-Chief Jeanne Craig for “A Matter of Time” (Outboard).

“I couldn’t be any more proud of this team,” said Harding. “We’re constantly pushing one another to challenge the status quo and to produce the best possible content. Whether that’s on video, social media, in our daily e-newsletter, in the pages of Power & Motoryacht or in our new publication, Outboard magazine, the team is all pulling in the same direction. For our peers to recognize that is a real source of pride.” The second issue of Outboard will be published in April 2019.

Power & Motoryacht contributing writer Carly Sisson was the beneficiary of BWI’s Inaugural Scholarship. The goal of the program in its first year is to award at least one scholarship of $2,000 to a deserving student, helping young individuals pursue a career in boating journalism. Sisson is currently an undergraduate studying journalism at the University of Vermont and demonstrates a passion for the field of boating media. She has written numerous articles for Power & Motoryacht, including “Better with Age” (Oct. 2017) and “Hidden Gem” (Feb. 2019).
