Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?
The Bertram 540 is a modern-day version of the much-loved original Bertram 54 and retains the 54’s famously sharp bow, long waterline, and deep-V hull, which combine to make the boat handle well in open water. Bertram also claims that the 540’s single, centerline fuel tank creates a zero-trim effect that should further enhance the boat’s ride. Since she’s powered by twin 1,676-hp CAT C32s, that ride will not only be smooth, but fast—to the tune of 46 mph, says Bertram. The 540 has also been given a sleeker, more contemporary sheerline that immediately marks her as a different boat than her predecessor—but that’s not the only marker of modernity you’ll find onboard. Stereo systems with iPod hookups are integrated into the bridge, saloon, and cockpit, making the 540 an ideal place to kick back after a long day of successfully fighting fish.
And this boat was most definitely built to go out and catch the big ones. The 540 replaces the 54’s glass windshield with a rugged fiberglass brow that will give any intrepid fisherman added piece of mind when pushing into a big head sea. And a more traditional interior layout, featuring a forward galley (the older version’s was aft) helps make room for fishing amenities, such as in-sole cockpit fishboxes, a livewell, either starboard-side freezers or tackle drawers, and more rod stowage. With all these accoutrements working in her favor, not only has Bertram taught an old dog plenty of new tricks, they’ve got it ready to hunt too.
