Like Tom Cruise in Top Gun, the “need for speed” was a high priority for the owners of a custom 101-foot motoryacht being built at Burger Boat Company. But other priorities included world-class fit and finish, seaworthiness, and state-of-the-art technology, plus finding a yard with a reputation for service and reliability. These factors, along with an immediate rapport with CEO and president David Ross, led the owners to select Burger to fulfill their desire for a distinctive American-built yacht.

Burger Boat Company’s Liberty
When thinking of high-performance builders, Burger may not be the first name that springs to mind. But working with Donald Blount & Associates, the Burger Design Team has engineered an innovative hull shape that incorporates both hard and soft chines; the former provides the lift to deliver fast cruising speeds, while the latter softens the ride to achieve good seakeeping. Meticulous attention to structural design and extensive use of lightweight materials also contribute to her performance. Cabin soles are composite honeycomb panels, while interior bulkheads are foam-core acoustic panels. All stone, such as marble and granite, are honeycomb-backed, lightweight products.
Styled by Cor D. Rover, the yacht’s exterior boasts several unusually tall windows in her deckhouse and a half-dozen large rectangular ports along each side of her hull; the latter provide natural light for the full-beam master suite amidships and for a pair of guest staterooms forward of a central foyer on the lower deck. Generous freeboard at the bow should keep her foredecks dry, while a rather stately deckhouse profile belies the abundant deadrise in her hull, an essential element of her ability to make speed even in rough seas.
Generously proportioned for a yacht her size, the bridge deck features an enclosed skylounge that opens onto a semienclosed dining and entertaining area. Farther aft, a hot tub lets guests soak up the sun. And with all that, the bridge deck also accommodates a Nautical Structures davit and a Castoldi tender.
Certified by ABS, the yacht features a comprehensive monitoring and information system integrated with the electrical power system. Scheduled for launch in 2008, this high-tech, high-speed project may open yet another chapter in the Burger story.
