The builder’s reputation for seaworthy boats continues with its latest cruiser.

Although you may not glean it from the company’s glamorous advertisements, the British builder Fairline claims the foundation of its brand is much more than just luxury. It’s about building a vessel that can also travel safely through heavy seas. And indeed, every Fairline, including the new 65 Squadron, is constructed with an interior liner, complete with a matrix of transversals and stringers bonded to the hand-laid hull that as a unit, reinforce it and create extra rigidity. On the outside, the 65’s running surface, designed by naval architect Bernard Olesinski, has a deep, fine entry and an 18-degree deadrise aft, a combination designed to provide a dry, smooth ride.

Powering this combination is a pair of standard 1,015-mhp Caterpillar inboards that the builder predicts will propel her to a top speed of 39.1 mph (34 knots). Available engine options include twin 1,150-mhp Caterpillar C18 ACERTs, which should raise top speed to 41.4 mph (36 knots), and two 1,100-mhp MAN powerplants that Fairline claims should generate 40.2 mph (35 knots).

Regardless of which power you select, once you’ve cruised your 65 through the rough stuff (perhaps using the overhead handrail in the cockpit to secure yourself) and have found a suitable harbor to relax in for the night, you’ll appreciate the 88-pound self-stowing Delta anchor, 17.5-kW Onan genset, and the flying-bridge wet bar. Or, if your destination is a dock or slip, you’ll be able to ease the 65 in with the help of the optional hydraulic bow thruster.

When it’s time to go inside, you’ll want to head below to the saloon, with its C-shape settee and C-shape galley with Avonite countertops to port. There’s also a similarly shaped dinette to starboard, just aft of the lower-helm station.

Finally, you’ll have a choice of accommodations one level down: a full-beam master with queen berth aft, a guest cabin with twins to
starboard, and a VIP with centerline queen forward. You can sleep soundly knowing that your boat will be able to handle the conditions with aplomb, no matter what tomorrow brings.
