Marquis Yachts 40 SC

There’s no denying the popularity of express cruisers. But in a way, they are fair-weather friends. When conditions get nasty, everyone has to huddle under the hardtop or, worse, retire to a cave-like saloon on the lower deck. It’s really only when the weather is nice that it’s fun to be out on the open, airy upper deck.

The Marquis 40 SC (Sport Cruiser) provides one creative solution to this dilemma. With a sleek, sporty profile, she offers big windows all around her deckhouse and a powered sunroof, so there’s no shortage of natural light and breeze when the sun is shining and skies are clear. Full-width glass doors open onto her aft deck, creating an airy ambiance as fulfilling as that of any express cruiser.

But rather than banishing the galley and settee/dinette (not to mention the cook) to the confines of a lower-deck space, the Marquis offers an L-shape galley and U-shape settee with a cocktail/dining table right up on the main deck, close enough to the helm station that everyone can be part of the conversation. And if the weather turns foul, he or she will still be as snug and cozy as on a trawler.

With two staterooms and a single head, the lower-deck area is strictly for sleeping and other essential functions. This isn’t to suggest that the staterooms are unpleasant; on the contrary, a pleasing decor and large in-deck portlights make the forward stateroom worthy of its “master” designation. With twin berths and its own entertainment system, the second stateroom is more than adequate for children or occasional adult guests.

But when the sun is shining, there are plenty of places to soak up rays, starting with a large sunpad on the foredeck and ending with an integral swim platform. And the transom holds a surprise: At the touch of a button, its lounge seat slides back about 18 inches, maximizing the outdoor entertaining area on the aft deck.

The Marquis 40 is powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS diesels and drives, promising better performance and lower fuel consumption than a conventional angled-shaft drive system. Engine choices include 330-, 370-, and 435-hp diesels. For the ultimate ease in maneuvering, all engines are available with joystick control.
