Fresh from Italy comes Sundeck Yachts’ flagship, the 580. Founded by Angelo Casartelli in 2015, Sundeck has sold 18 boats to date, beginning with the 580’s predecessor, the 550.
Sundeck’s build process begins in a large facility in Fano, Italy, that houses hull molds, the resin infusion process and a 5-axis CNC router. Deck assembly and commissioning occurs up the road at their plant in Ravenna, on the Adriatic coast.
Designed for entertaining, the boat has numerous gathering locations. The foredeck has an oversized sunpad with a bench seat forward for relaxing and taking in the views. The flybridge is generously sized and plays host to a large C-shaped settee, a table and a two-person helm seat. There’s ample room for deck chairs and toys on the aft deck area.
Sundeck’s 580 boasts classic-meets-contemporary lines. Visibility is excellent from stem to stern thanks to the large salon windows and bi-fold glass doors in the salon. The aft galley is well situated for preparing meals and serving guests either in the cockpit or salon. The real magic in this space isn’t the configuration, but the galley cabinets that have hinged covers to conceal the sink, counters and cooktop, blending the work areas into the overall main level decor.
Accommodations come in three- or four-cabin configurations, with a full beam amidship master that can be divided into two staterooms. There’s also an aft crew cabin if extra help is needed aboard, though the 580 is well suited for an owner-operator thanks to strong sightlines from the upper and lower helms.
A key safety aspect I noticed while underway is the wide walkaround side decks and high gunwales and railings—up to 3 feet, 5 inches high at points—keeping any little ones aboard safely ensconced in the boat.
The European-spec 580 was equipped with Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT) diesel engines; yachts coming to the U.S. will be powered by either Cummins or Cats. With an axe bow, sharp entry and wide chines that start at the peak, the 580 is a seaworthy boat that slices waves well and hops onto plane easily. At the top end I saw the 580 hit 25 knots and sport a range of 1,200 nautical miles at 9.5 knots. A Seakeeper is standard.
Along with the 580, Sundeck offers the 430 and 580 Sport models as well as the 480, 700 and 850 motoryachts. A 125-footer is on the drawing board, to be built of steel or aluminum. This might be a new builder, but with time, I have a feeling we’ll be hearing a lot more about Sundeck Yachts in the years to come.
