A growing segment of the cruising market yearns for a safe, reliable, efficient yacht that’s comfortable to live aboard, capable of ocean crossings, and manageable for a couple without crew. Many of them have the time, money, and desire to cruise the world on their own terms. Targeting that fast-growing market, Queenship Marine Industries has collaborated with the design firm of Sparkman & Stephens to develop the Passagemaker 60, a well-found, full-displacement cruising yacht. With elegant and purposeful touches like a graceful canoe stern, a Portuguese bow, a prominent funnel on her bridge, and teak caprails throughout, she evokes nostalgic images of larger, classic motoryachts of a bygone era. But styling aside, her equipment, systems, and amenities are as modern as tomorrow.

Powered by a single 340-hp Lugger diesel inboard, she has a backup propulsion system that uses a hydraulic motor powered by a pump connected to the power take-off unit on the diesel genset. For safety she has five separate watertight compartments; ten independently alarmed bilge pumps; fire and bilge panels in the wheelhouse, master stateroom, and flying bridge; and automatic fuel and damper shutdowns.

Her hull has been extensively tank tested and optimized for minimum resistance and maximum roll damping. A deep, full skeg protects her running gear, and active fin stabilizers help to reduce roll motion. Standard bow and stern thrusters will take the stress out of docking and maneuvering, making it easy for a cruising couple to handle her. At the stern a big, integral swim platform extends her waterline length, further enhancing the hull’s efficiency.

The 60 will be offered in either of two configurations: The standard version has port and starboard side decks with full walkaround access. For those wanting more interior space, the wide-body version has side decks on the starboard side only and a correspondingly larger saloon and galley area. In either version, the lower deck offers a generous master suite amidships, a VIP suite forward, and a third guest stateroom along the port side.

The first Passagemaker 60 is slated for delivery in mid-2007 to an owner who plans to live aboard part of the year and cruise from Alaska to the southeastern coast of the United States. Designs for larger models, including a 75-foot and 87-foot version, are in the works.
