Burger 43-Meter

One of the most important parameters in yacht design is the intended maximum speed. If the hull is meant to be capable of exceeding its theoretical hull speed, then it generally has a hard chine, to make the water separate from the hull at speed, and flatter sections near the stern to keep the vessel from squatting in her own wake. But if design speed is less than or equal to hull speed, then she

Jongert 3900

During the 17th century, the Netherlands produced some of the most gifted painters. Now, a collaboration among yachtbuilder Jongert, Azure Naval Architects, and stylist Guido de Groot may be part of the next wave of Dutch Masters. At the least, the striking profile of the Jongert 3900 is certain to turn heads wherever she goes.

A Boat Is Born, Part III Gallery

It’s been about nine months since the design process for the 64-foot Makaira was started. While both the designers at Applied Concepts Unleashed and the builder’s team have enjoyed the exchange of ideas that both parties feel will result in the next-generation sportfisherman, it’s now time for the plan to become a real boat.

Bertram 540 Convertible

It’s always dicey messing with a classic, especially one as widely revered as the Bertram 54. But Bertram’s parent company, the Ferretti Group, is out to establish its own legend, by innovating and defying the norms. And so the classic 54 is being reborn as the Bertram 540. Make no mistake: This is no mere facelift, with a nip and tuck to update styling. The 540 is the result of a fundamental

Regulator 34SS Center Console

Mostly it’s multimillion-dollar yachts that dominate this space, so the new Regulator 34SS is a decided change of pace. Indeed, what’s interesting about this boat is that she appeals to both serious sportsmen who already own a battlewagon yet want a more efficient angling platform and those looking for a mid-30-foot sportfisherman as their primary (or possibly only) boat.

Sunrise 45-Meter

When passing hors d’oeuvres at a cocktail party, it’s not unusual for someone to say “go on, take two.” But it’s a different story when the subject is a 147-foot motoryacht. That was the essence of a conversation between yacht builder Guillaume Roch and businessman Herbert Baum that led to the formation of Sunrise Yachts. Baum had asked Roch the best way to build the yacht they had been

In part one of our exclusive five-part series (“A Boat Is Born”), the Makaira team took the first conceptual steps in creating its brand-new sportfisherman. This included selecting the Waveform variable-deadrise hull shape, a design the team hopes will help the vessel achieve speeds in excess of those of her peers in the

John Williams Stanley 42

Say what you will about contemporary styling and fads, but judging by what’s often seen at boat shows and marinas, they appeal to lots of folks. So it’s gratifying to see an offering like the Stanley 42, a boat that exudes the timeless, tug-at-your-heartstrings beauty and grace that define the Down East style. And it’s no surprise that she’s built by John Williams Boat Company, an iconic Maine

Tradition 58 Long-Range Trawler

It’s been a long time in gestation: Seaforth Marine built the first Tradition a few years ago, a lovely 54-foot prototype that has been redesigned, morphing into the flagship 58, slated to debut in Annapolis later this year. She’s a serious long-range, deep-ocean passagemaker with robust, reliable mechanical systems and all the amenities necessary for extended voyaging.

A Boat Is Born

Welcome to the first of a five-part series in which we follow the creation of a brand-new sportfishing boat from conception to launch. PMY has been granted exclusive access to the birth of Makaira. For now we‘ll keep its parent company anonymous, but as we get closer to launch, we will reveal it. Of course, we’ll conclude the series with an exclusive first test of this exciting new

Richmond Yachts 142 Trideck

It’s unusual for this column to feature the same yacht for a second time, but the story behind Richmond Yachts is unusual enough to justify a reprise. Ever since Texas businessman and lifelong yachtsman Don Davis took over the British Columbia-based yard (then named Sovereign Yachts) a few years ago, he had a broad ambition: to bring the same level of quality and innovation to the yachting scene

Riva 92 Duchessa Fly

As an encore to the 2005 debut of its 115-foot flagship, Athena, the Italian builder Riva introduces its newest offering, the 92-foot Duchessa Fly. Filling a gap between Athena and the 85 Opera Super, she’s arguably the sleekest and most stylish of Riva’s decidedly upscale large offerings.Illustration: Bruce Alderson

Icon Yachts 62-Meter Custom Yacht

Although the distinction between custom and semicustom can sometimes be blurred, it’s often taken to be the following: A custom yacht is designed from the keel up, inside and out, to suit the client, while a semicustom yacht has a custom interior design integrated into a builder’s standard hull and deckhouse configuration. Clearly the semicustom approach is more cost-effective, insofar as

This high-tech router accomplishes two goals: It reduces overall build time and designs to very tight tolerances. In the end, some work was done by hand. The boat's hull was fine-tuned with a two-man longboard and a whole lot of elbow grease.
