“[My husband] Michael and I were on a trip called FUBAR in November 2011—a 15-day cruise from San Diego down the Baja coast to our final destination of La Paz, Mexico,” reader Kristen Kusler wrote. “I took this photo right after leaving Magdalena Bay, Mexico. My husband, an avid angler, would wake me up every morning as the sun was rising and he was putting out the lines. Every morning the sky just exploded with color. It was truly breathtaking.”

“Every year on the day after Thanksgiving we take the kids out rock fishing in the Chesapeake Bay near the Bay Bridge,” reader Lisa Wendling wrote. “Last year we had a fantastic day of fishing and it ended with a spectacular sunset. We fished on our 40-foot Ocean Yacht, Impulsive, out of Severna Park, Maryland. While the kids were napping, we started goofing around with their Christmas hats and took this picture. We have been doing this tradition for the last 10 years.”

“Every year since 2003 [my wife] Carol and I have voyaged from Seattle to the fjords around Bella Bella, British Columbia, including stops at Kimsquit at the head of Dean Channel (where, contrary to the information in all the guidebooks, it is not impossible to anchor), Kynoch Inlet, Roscoe Inlet, and out to Aristazabel Island,” writes reader Art Harrigan. “Ranger is a 70-foot, 75-ton fiberglass displacement boat, a one-off design by Krogen built at Little Harbor Boatworks in Florida in 1985. Power is two Cat 3306s. We acquired the boat in 2002. The boat voyaged on her own bottom to Tampa, then to Seattle via the Panama Canal (we hired a captain for this trip). Carol and I own the boat equally with our next-door neighbors, Jim and Burnley Snyder. We handle the boat ourselves—no crew—and average around 1,200 miles a year. On this particular trip, the Snyders joined us for the early stage. We traveled together from Campbell River, traversing Johnstone Strait in mid-August, and stopped that first day at Mamalilaculla where this photo was taken. Mamalilaculla is an ancient First Nation village. The area around it, including Goat Island where we were anchored, is a collection of small islands on the south side of Knight Inlet a short distance from the beginning of the inlet at Blackfish Sound. The islands are very sheltered and stunningly beautiful.”

“The journey started as a flight from the Greek island of Corfu, where I live now, to Cyprus, which is my home country,” reader Kevork Voskeritchian wrote. “Waiting in the Corfu airport I was catching up with friends, some of which are skippers. As luck would have it, one of them was returning back to Cyprus for the winter and the owners cancelled at the last minute, so he was in need of a crew. The boat, a Ferretti 68, was in Athens, where I had to change planes. Being October, sailing from Athens to Cyprus is a cat-and-mouse game with the weather as the southerly storms begin and can be rather fearsome, but it’s also the time of the year when sunsets are particularly impressive. This shot was taken when we had just outrun a storm on our tail and had hit some relatively calm waters as we were approaching the island of Kos.”

“This picture was taken from York Island, about two thirds of the way up Vancouver Island on the Inside Passage,” reader Jerry Sword wrote. “My wife Tanya and I have been traveling the Inside Passage since 1968. This was our 44th trip, and we’ve only visited York Island two times due to weather, water, and time constraints. I felt I had to take this photo as the Inside Passage is rarely this calm. We travel back and forth in our 47-foot Bayliner pilothouse, which we anchor about 10 nautical miles to the east in a place called Forward Harbor. We tow a 17-foot Boston Whaler behind for exploring and fishing in Alaska.”

We were down for the Annual Fell’s Point Fun Festival [an outdoor street festival held every year during the first full weekend in October].”

“This photo was taken in June 2013 on a perfectly still morning during a six-day cruise to Loreto, Mexico, and back,” reader David Pincus wrote. “We were at Bahía Candeleros, just 7 miles south of Puerto Escondido. When we woke up I grabbed my camera and jumped in the dinghy to get some photos. This is a great anchorage with a brand-new resort on the beach that you can dinghy over to. They have a small market that you can get some food and supplies from. Needless to say, we had a splendid couple of days there. Our next cruise will be about 15 days and we will go much farther north towards Mulegé and Bahía Concepción. In November we plan to head south for the winter to Puerto Vallarta and beyond, before returning to La Paz in the late spring of 2014.”

“Meander is a 1983 Grand Banks 36 Classic that we bought in the fall of 2012 with cruising in mind,” reader Capt. John Rigney wrote. “She has twin Lehman 120s, and a 7.5-kilowatt generator, and she carries 425 gallons of diesel, 140 gallons fresh water, and 100 gallons in the holding tank. The three-stateroom layout provides plenty of room for living and stowage. We had looked all over the eastern U.S. for a boat we liked and ended up buying Meander 40 miles from home in Algonac, Michigan.
We purchased Meander after selling our sightseeing boat business here in Port Huron. Along with my wife, Camille, and our children, we’d operated Huron Lady cruises since 1995. Before starting the business I was captain of a rail-ferry that carried rail freight across the St. Clair River between Port Huron and Sarnia, Ontario. I hold a First Class Pilot’s license for the Great Lakes, graduating from the Great Lakes Maritime Academy in 1980.
So, while I’ve been boating for most of my adult life, the trip this fall was our first real pleasure cruise, and it was all new territory for us. We left Port Huron in late August cruising up Lake Huron to Georgian Bay, through Ontario and Quebec on the Trent Severn Waterway. We then took a side trip to the 1,000 Islands, the Rideau Canal, the Ottawa River, and the St. Lawrence River. We went through Lake Champlain to Chimney Point, Vermont. We then dry-docked Meander for the winter at Champlain Bridge Marina and will complete the loop in the spring through the Champlain Canal, Erie Canal, Lake Erie, and the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers. We chose fall and spring for the trip to avoid the crowds on the waterways. Besides, we like our home-port of Port Huron during the summer and wouldn’t want to miss cruising activities with our friends here. Cruising in the off seasons extends our boating season beyond what we would normally do.”

The captain and two lucky crew members made the crossing to West End for a summer vacation.”

“This photo was taken in the south anchorage of Warderick Wells, the central island in the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park. Of all the places we have cruised—from Greece to the Galápagos Islands—this is the most beautiful spot for family watersports. There is barely room for Paradigm to swing with the tidal flow, and at low tide her rudders carve grooves in the bottom sand. One of the great things about boating is that we can visit places like this which are completely inaccessible to landlubbers!”
With a cruising résumé like that, we’ll have to take your word on it being a great spot.
