1969 Bertram Race Boat — White Tornado

White Tornadoidles up next to her competition—the 32 Cary—in one of her last known races.
The Cary’s new hull design would replace the more traditional V-bottoms of boats like White Tornado.

The 1969 Raceboat was originally designed to be powered by inboards but with I/O power beginning to grip the racing circuit, Bertram designers figured out how to implement them aboard.

When designer Mike Peters first bought White Tornado from Cadillac McDaniel, he trailered it to his home and it felt like the boat weighed a ton. He would learn that the bilges and keel had been filled with hundreds of gallons of stagnant water. It was a labor of love for the designer to re-fiberglass her stringers.

RecreatingWhite Tornado’s helm to what it was like was not as easy as one might think.
Nick and the team at Guardado Marine would spend hours looking at tiny old racing images to get the proportions and measurements just right.

Preparing for paint: Whether your painting your boat’s bottom in the yard or a high gloss raceboat,
the key to sucess is the same, it’s all in the prep work.

Old racing photos provided by racing enthusiast Marco Bertini revealed exactly where
the type should go and how the colors originally looked.

After the fiberglass hull was created, Nick and the crew at TNT Custom Marine
spent a lot of time determining where the many gauges should go.

Despite the passing of decades, racing drives have changed very little.

Another long Web search results in the finding of authentic Bertram race parts.

The first of many times the new racing engines were lowered into the boat.
The owner estimates that the engines were taken in and out six times each
as the mounts and exhaust system was fabricated.

Editor-in-Chief of Power & Motoryacht
One of the lucky ones who was born into boating, Dan grew up cruising aboard his family’s 33 Egg Harbor. Marinas and boatyards served as summer school and the foundation for a career on the water. When not chasing stories for Power & Motoryacht magazine he can be found cruising Long Island Sound with his wife, sons, and faithful (furry) first mate Salty.
