Measuring from both sides and making vertical chalk marks ensures that the boat’s name will be centered. Interestingly enough, Larry centers the letters by eye first. He uses the steel ruler only to check his “guesstimation.” Was he right? Yup, perfect!

A Guide to Resurfacing Your Transom – Step 8

Overlapping the outer edges of the transom with a swath of varnishing tape (as shown here) diminishes the chance that a distinct line between old and new paint will form during the spraying process. Basically, Lowe says, the overlapping tape deflects paint away from the taped transom edge and reduces the buildup that might otherwise accumulate there.

A Guide to Resurfacing Your Transom – Step 7

Lowe uses plain, blue 3M varnishing tape and SMART masking paper from FinishMaster (www.finishmaster.com) to prepare the transom for spraying “Flag-Blue” Awlcraft 2000. “Awlcraft is much easier to match than gel coat,” he says, “because it tends to fade much less by comparison.”

A Guide to Resurfacing Your Transom – Step 5

Lowe repeatedly goes over the transom with a high-speed, pneumatic-type orbital sander, using 320-grit sandpaper, followed by some hand sanding with the same grade of sandpaper. “Just to rough up the surface,” he says.
