Caprio’s First impression:
If we’d seen this shapely yacht 35 years ago, she would have seemed impossibly radical. Now, her styling impresses us as tastefully conservative, timeless even, in an era of experimental designs.

Created by Cheoy Lee Shipyards and Overing Yacht Designs, this new Alpha One Eleven (111) design was introduced to the public at the 2014 Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show in October. At present, she is the largest of the shipyard’s sporty Alpha series.

An elegantly reversed sheerline establishes her sporting character, letting her feel at home in a mooring field full of hot boats. In the rendering, the sheerline gracefully dips and seems to anchor the sail panel that rises to visually support the sun deck. Tracing the sheer to its terminus at the transom shows this design’s connection to the fabulous American commuter yachts of the early 20th century. Whether the design team did this on purpose doesn’t matter. The effect is there, and it looks great.

Any yacht this size is going to have a lot of freeboard, which can be ungainly. Not so on the One Eleven. Her designers have seasoned the topsides with a row of portlights, which disguise the large amount of surface area. The subtle smile formed by the long window-cum-engine-room-vent amidships adds a touch of whimsy to the profile. It made me smile in return.

Cheoy Lee offers a general arrangement plan that places the master forward on the main deck and one that locates the master amidships on the lower deck. The latter GA has a VIP cabin in the bow. Between the master and VIP cabins, we find an en suite twin guest stateroom to port and an en suite queen stateroom opposite.

Quarters for a crew of four fill the space between the engine room and the beach club, which also stows the water toys. Both en suite cabins have an upper and lower berth and a hanging locker. A lounge with a galley, dinette, and access to the engine room separates the sleeping cabins from the machinery space. All very elegant indeed.
