We tracked down the inside scoop on what boatbuilders are up to next.

To get the skinny on the Down East-y True North 50, I spoke with Sam Howell, a partner at Langan Design Professionals, the ambitious Newport, Rhode Island, naval design and architecture firm tasked with the developing the vessel. Howell says, “We want the boat to have classical lines, with a reverse transom look and the clamshell doors and a very simple interior. There’s a utilitarian aspect to her: clean lines, low freeboard, lots of flare in the forward sections, and the attempt was to advance that utilitarian aspect with a modern feel. To do that we put in Volvo IPS drives for efficient control and a sophisticated feel at the helm. You can also operate the boat’s lights through an iPad and she’s got power windows that will go up and down—there’s little touches like that that give her a modern, almost megayacht-y feel, with a quality of build that can’t be beat.”
