October 2014

We tracked down the inside scoop on what boatbuilders are up to next.

All three of the new boats Viking plans to debut at this year’s Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show are building excitement. Of course everyone’s heard about the mammoth 92 Convertible, but perhaps you’re not as familiar with another upcoming launch, the 75 Motoryacht. As Peter Frederiksen, Viking’s director of communications, explained to me, the boat could soon become a fan favorite, thanks in part to her enclosed bridge. “We’ve had so much success with the enclosed bridges on the convertibles, we thought maybe we should give it a try, and it’s turning out very well,” he says. “This boat won’t just be another ‘station wagon of the sea’: It’s got big engines, 1,925-horsepower Caterpillar C32 ACERTs with the Three60 Precision Control system, and the bow thruster and Twin Disc transmission are controlled by a joystick that makes the boat behave like its got pods, as far as maneuverability goes.” Sounds like this Michael Peters design is going to be a real go-getter. And I for one look forward to having a better look.

Launch Date: October 2014
