Long known for its navigational electronics, Garmin is now about to enter the VHF market with two fixed-mount radios. Pre-release information describes the VHF100 as an entry-level radio, but at $250, it’s definitely full-featured. It’s waterproof, has a large 3.2-inch screen and straightforward controls, and can handle NOAA weather alerts as well as the usual DSC functions including automated-distress messaging. It also boasts Position Tracking, which lets you locate and keep tabs on up to three boats in the immediate area. To all this, the $400 VHF200i adds a hailer/intercom and the option of a command microphone for dual-station operation.

By adding these new models to its line-up, Garmin is now able to offer a complete range of helm station electronics, something sure to make the company’s products more attractive to production boatbuilders and boat owners who are looking for a coherent package of communications and navigation equipment.
