Captain Fix-It

Have the right tool at the right time.
I’m often told I can fix anything. But really, I’m more of a jack-of-all-trades than anything else. Diagnosing and swapping a faulty fuel injector, for example, is pretty simple for me. But once the cylinder head has to come off, it’s time for me to call in the pros. I suppose the illusion that I can do virtually anything stems from a thorough working knowledge of most ship’s systems, but more importantly perhaps, from always having the right tools to fix straightforward problems once they arise.
As a paid skipper, carrying tools onboard whatever boat I was employed to run was easy. To maintain appearances as “Captain Fix-It” during freelance jobs, on the other hand, I had to haul along the portable tool kit shown here—weighing “just” 32 pounds—with everything I might need but nothing extra.
