Fleming 78

The Fleming 78 is suited to offshore passages, and European Editor Alan Harper had the opportunity to join the delivery crew from Cannes to Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands.

Every good passage begins in the engine room, and the Fleming 78 is as good a place to start as any.

Well-lit and with plenty of good equipment arranged in seamanlike fashion, the Fleming 78 is a joy to maintain.

Leaving Cannes is sometimes easier said than done. The show makes for a crowded fairway.

The skipper of Langano, Gareth, pulls double duty in the galley with some meal prep.

The crew enjoy a final dinner with friends in France the night before departure.

The saloon is a comfortable spot that makes excellent use of space.

The crew eschews dining ashore and seemingly has already left the craziness of Cannes in their minds.

Langano makes way into the Baie de Cannes and her crew has an excellent vantage point on the flying bridge.

Fleming 78

Langano is equipped with what Fleming calls a California deck, which is situated aft of the saloon but a few steps above the height of the cockpit.

At the lower helm of Langano, a little paper chartwork goes a long way to tracking progress.

The crew enjoys fine weather with open pilothouse doors and fair winds.

The helm seat on the flying bridge makes the most of perfect cruising weather.

The crew’s quarters are finished to the same level as the guest accommodations.

It’s best to give some seagoing friends a wide berth.

Cruising conditions in mid-September were hard to beat.

The flying bridge is spacious and has many levels for outdoor enjoyment at sea.

There’s something to be said for time alone in the pilothouse on an overnight passage.

The forward stateroom is equipped with twin berths.

It’s almost as though the moon is lighting the course and watching over Langano.

Land ho! The mass of Minorca comes into sharp relief out of the haze.

Langano’s lower helm loads up the crew with data on the approach.

The amidships master makes the most of its position for comfort when the seas get rough.

Getting closer to the destination as the varied topography of the Balearics becomes more discernible.

The pilothouse offers excellent companion seating at this dinette, so a helmsman will enjoy company on all but the loneliest watches.

Langano gets a side-tie at Port de Pollença.
